It's that time of year when cards, candy and gifts are bought and exchanged and just about every restaurant is booked solid. Some may write it off as a "Hallmark holiday", while others expect ridiculous or expensive gifts and will accept no less.

Me? I see the holiday as just another day to show my sweetie that I love him. I guess he lucked out by me not being much of a jewelry person, ha!

So how am I celebrating this year? By completely surprising him when he gets home from work with a decadent, cherry themed meal!

I forget what initially gave me the idea, but for years making a themed Valentine's Day meal has sort of become a fun tradition. Usually the theme of the meal is based around a red fruit (cute, I know). The first year I did it, I picked strawberries. Then watermelon. Then apples. I suppose one day I'll run out of red fruits, but for now, I still have a few I can cross off!

I thought cherries would be an appropriate fruit of choice for the holiday. There's something sexy about cherries. They're red, sweet, juicy and plump. Not to mention, delicious and healthy! Come to think of it, a cherry is almost heart-shaped, even.

We didn't celebrate the holiday last year, so my boyfriend probably thought I stopped for good but boy, was he mistaken!

The Menu

To accompany the meal, I designed and printed this menu (pictured above) for the occasion. Because I'm just a nerd like that. Fine details, people!

The Meal

SALAD - SWEET & SPICY CHERRY CUCUMBER SALAD

MAIN COURSE - ROASTED DUCK WITH A CHERRY BOURBON GLAZE SERVED WITH A SIDE OF ASPARAGUS

DESSERT - CHERRY CHEESECAKE BARS TOPPED WITH CHERRY SAUCE & FRESH WHIPPED CREAM

No matter what the occasion, I always love to cook and enjoy food with loved ones. The feeling I get when someone enjoys my cooking is indescribable and brings me so much joy.

I think I'll keep this tradition alive in years to come...

How are you celebrating the holiday?
